Environmental portraits, sometimes called office portraits, are images that show subjects in their workplace, usually doing their work. These are different from your business portraits in that they usually show the person doing their job in the correct situation in which it happens, as opposed to a white head shot. Environmental portraiture is also very different from lifestyle portraiture, which often focuses on capturing everyday people in their everyday environments.

As you will see in all of our portrait classes, the equipment I use for each shoot is pretty standard.

When it comes to lighting and camera setup, there are no fixed answers. As you will see in each class, I used different lighting for each portrait and my camera settings were also different. For example, when I photographed a Ferrari I chose two light settings to create a beautiful dark image with depth of field, but for the cake decorator I went for bright, bright light with great depth of field. No matter what you’re recording, you need to look at your site and decide what works for that theme.

When it comes to planning a portrait session, there are several things you can do in advance to ensure success. I’ve covered it briefly below, but I go into detail about each of these in the first chapter of our portrait class environment.

1. Research the location: Researching the company beforehand will help you get a feel for the location, which is especially helpful if you can’t find a previous location.

2. Know your field of work – As part of your research, make sure you understand what your field of study entails so you know how to best represent it to them and their company.

3. Discuss clothing choices: This may seem obvious, but don’t leave clothing choices to chance. It’s also a good idea to ask your subject to bring some options with them on the date.

4. Have an assistant – An assistant will be a big help during the day, as well as carrying glasses, lighting and even standing next to the subject while you test the lighting.

5. Get there early – This will not only create excitement, but also give you time to look around the place and figure out your shot.

6. Reorganize the situation – Don’t be afraid to move around to find the best products. You can move everything back when you’re done.

7. Think about the mood – Think about the mood and emotion you want in the shot, and think about how you will use the lighting to achieve it.

8. Consider existing lighting – If there is lighting around, think about how you can incorporate it and if you need it. It can be a good idea to include some natural lighting as it often gives a real feel to the image.

9. Talk to your subjects – Take the time to talk to your subjects and make them feel comfortable. Explaining what you are doing and why can be a good way to do it because it also makes them aware of your skills.

10. Review your final photos: Again, this may seem obvious, but it’s worth mentioning. Take a look at your photo before you go out to make sure your subject is in focus, the depth of field is just right, and there aren’t any small details that will distract from your subject.

If you can’t go to the location before the shoot, perhaps the biggest challenge in this type of photography is working to overcome the unknown. A lot of times with environmental portraits you don’t really know who you’re dealing with and who you’re photographing, what they look like, what they’re wearing, what their location is, or what kind of lighting is good. This means that as a photographer you need to be able to think on your feet and overcome these challenges when you arrive.

Time – Perhaps the biggest challenge in photography is the lack of time. We usually only have a small window of time, but there are many obstacles to overcome. Even if you research the location before you shoot, you must be prepared to think on your feet. You’ll also see in the whiskey sommelier shot how I prepared my shot and used an assistant to test the lighting before taking the shot to help save time.

Location Photography: When you work on location, you don’t know what you’re working with until you get there. Places can be crowded, busy, and often not what you want. Be prepared for this and know that you may have to find a good place or even restore the product.

Lighting – Lighting the scene is something that many photographers struggle with. It’s often the case to work with mixed lighting because light alone won’t be enough (like shooting a carpenter), while in other situations (like a sugar confectioner) you’ll need good lighting in the studio if needed. not available lighting needed, so make sure you’re prepared with two or three lights (or speedlites) and a few settings that can work for different situations.

Communicate with your subject: As with any image, creating a connection with your subject is key if you want to get the best results. The important thing here is to have confidence because this will help you study easily. Even if you don’t have a lot of time, take it to talk to your subjects, explain what you do and what you want to achieve. Talk to them during the session to help them feel comfortable because it will make the experience better for everyone involved.
