Isometric Design In Photoshop – One of the best things about Affinity Designer is that it allows you to intuitively create an isometric illustration. You can also create isometric illustrations in other vector design programs, such as Adobe Illustrator. However, you need to create your own grid and manually create all the shapes to fit that grid. In Affinity Designer you have some great tools that make creating an isometric illustration much easier.

To create an isometric illustration in Affinity, simply set up your isometric mesh and then draw with the shape or pen tools, select “edit in plane” to draw directly on the desired isometric plane. Here is a tutorial on how to do that and build a simple isometric house.

To start our isometric illustration, we open a new document and start using the Isometric Tools panel. Create a new document in the desired size. When working with isometric illustrations, I usually like to create a square document. For example: New Document > Web, 1920 x 1920 px 72 dpi

With your new document open, look for the Isometric panel. If you can’t find it, it’s under View > Study > Isometric. With the Isometric panel open, click Change Grid at the bottom of it. This will display the Mesh and Snapping Axis settings for the isometric mesh. You can adjust the settings and see what happens in the table below.

I usually just add space and divisions. For this document, I will use 40px and 2 spaces. I like to have tight grid lines because it allows for finer detail in the isometric drawing.

Now that we have our masks set up, we can start drawing. Zoom in multiple times using the zoom tool. You want to be close enough to use the networks properly. When you start drawing, you want all the edges and corners to line up perfectly. Let’s start building a cube.

At the top of the isometric panel, select Page. This will change the grid, making it easier to draw the side of a shape.

Then click Edit on the plan. This is one of the most powerful isometric illustration tools in Affinity. This allows you to draw a shape that matches the lateral orientation of your shape. Then draw a square with the rectangle tool. As you draw, you will see a shape drawn at the desired angle. Make sure your shape lines up with the grid in each corner. If you want your shape to be a perfect square, remember to hold shift while drawing.

Once you have your first page in shape, we can start on the first page. Do the same as you did before, this time select Front. Next, draw another square to be the face of your cube with the rectangle tool. Remember to hold shift if you want a perfect frame.

Once you have drawn the first page, you will want to choose a different color for the page. Making the different planes of your isometric drawing different colors is a big part of making it look three-dimensional.

I often like to have the front the lighter color, the sides the darker color and the top color somewhere in the middle. This is why I usually choose my top color first, then add the sides and front. You can choose your colors using the Swatches panel or when a shape is selected in the upper left corner of the screen.

Next, we will draw the top of the cube. Using the Rectangle Tool, with Top selected in the Isometric panel, draw the top.

And now we have our isometric cube. Everything else in isometric design relies on it, so if you have it, you’re good to go. At this point we can start adding things to make it more interesting. We can go back to a house, a pool, something. Maybe we should build a house with a swimming pool! Yes, we do. First, I want to zoom out a bit. Zoom out with the zoom tool, press ALT to change the zoom tool.

When I draw a house, I need a little ground to prevent it from floating in space. My house needs a place to live. A place with grass. To do this, I will use the new rectangle tool to draw the front, side and top under the cube. Draw the top first as this will determine the measurements you will use for the patio. Then I used CTRL + Shift + [ to put it under the cube.

When I make the cube in a house, I will give new colors. From the top, choose a color that goes well with the green grass in the yard.

Now we have a small farm with our brown cube. Since the cube doesn’t look like a house yet, we need to add some details. For starters, I’m going to add a flat roof. Since we’re trying to keep things simple here, a flat roof is the easiest. To make the roof, I will expand the front and side shapes with a grid stitch.

Be sure to click on the corresponding plane in the Isometric panel as you adjust each shape. This will be easier to be precise. At this point, start moving the figures to the back and others to the front to make the isometric illustration look realistic. You can right-click on any shape > Arrange to display layout options. Or use keyboard shortcuts.

Once the front and side shapes are elongated, you can draw two new shapes for the back of your cube. Remember to match the colors with the correct direction they are facing.

Then we give ourselves some surface for our cover using what we just drew. Use two grid boxes in width to draw four rectangles on the roof. Then add some depth by drawing the inner surface of the roof. You need to zoom in and use the Node tool to get a good fit. The node tool allows you to capture and manipulate any node/anchor point in the shape. Before the node tool can work, you need to convert your shape into something we can manipulate. Right click on the shape > Convert to Curve. Once that’s done, you can shape the shapes perfectly with the Node tool.

At this point, you may want to go back and adjust the colors. If the colors on the roof are the same as everything else, the individual shapes can be lost. I slightly brightened the main front of the cube and added the top of the roof.

Now our flat roof has gained depth. You can make the upper part of the roof as high or as deep as you want. I made the grid a square deep, because of how much I extended the roof before.

Next, we must give this house some qualities of home. Maybe a window? Two windows? The design of the windows will follow the same principles as the roof. But instead of taking something out of our cube, we put windows inside the cube.

First, you need to figure out where you want your window. Then draw. Use the rectangle tool and find out which plane you want to draw. I want to draw my window in the side plane. Next, I added the front and top of the inner window frame so that it is nested in the cube. Give it a blue color to make it look more like a window. You need to use the new node tool here to adjust the shape. Remember, right-click and click Convert Curves first.

When your window is drawn, you can add another window if there is space. Create a new one or duplicate the one you have already created. To duplicate, first select all the frames in your window. Then press CTRL + G (or Command + G on Mac) to group the shapes. Then Shift + Alt drag the new shape away from the original.

You can now play with the placement of your windows. Keep them aligned with your network, but take them wherever you want. As long as they remain in the same plan as they were drawn. I want to add a third window to my house using the same method of doubling. It gives the house a very modern feel.

Since I placed my windows near the edge of the side floor, I added more windows to the front floor. First, I need to click on the front image. Then I started drawing a new window like I did before.
