In this article, I’ll explain what the Vanishing Point filter is – and how you can use it to simplify and improve your photography.

Vanishing Point is a Photoshop filter that allows objects and edits in your photo to scale and orient according to the orientation of the photo.

For example, if you’re photographing a wall parallel to your camera’s sensor, the wall (and the overall image) should be visible.

But, if, instead, we shoot the wall at an angle and shoot the way it disappears toward a distant point, the wall – and the scene – will appear three-dimensional.

(See how the arrow stretched along the railing disappears from the scene? Because I included it at the vanishing point!)

When starting the Vanishing Point Filter, you may wonder what to do and how to use it.

Now, if the lines that make up the plane are blue, it means that everything is working properly. Yellow or red lines mean that Photoshop will not accept your drawing plan.

Once you’ve created the plan, try moving the corner points around until you get it right. You can zoom in if you need to be more precise.

If you save and close your image, the perspective plane will also be saved. When you open your file again, you can start the Vanishing Point filter and the perspective planes you created will be there and editable.

If you want to create a separate background, finish the work on the foreground, click on another part of the image and start again.

If you want to connect your two planes, you need to separate the second plane from the first. To do this, press

By default, the background is at a 90 degree angle to the foreground. If that’s not what you need, you can use the angle controller you’ll find in the toolbar at the top of the Vanishing Point window:

First, make sure the object you want to add to the perspective is on a layer. Choose an object (you can use

After placing the object on the clipboard, add a new blank layer on top of the background image. This is because everything you do in the Vanishing Point workspace is applied to the selected layer when you open a filter.

Next, open the Vanishing Point filter and create a perspective plane that follows the point of view you want to render the new element.

Feel free to scale or change the material. Then, when you’re happy with its shape and size, click on it and drag it onto the plane.

You will notice that the object changes shape and size according to its position in the plane. It gets smaller as you get further away from the camera and gets bigger as you get closer to the camera.

To return to the normal workspace. You can see the pasted element (in perspective) on a new layer. You can then use the layer style options to add shadows and create more realistic compositions.

You can use this perspective collage technique to display your photos on a billboard, create graffiti on a wall, or apply logos to product packaging images.

One of the most common uses of the Vanishing Point filter in Photoshop is to paste elements into perspective.

Then provide the pixels you want to clone. To do this, hold down the Alt/Option key and click on the target pixels (note that you must click somewhere

You can clone in the same way you use the normal Clone Stamp tool. However, the results were very different.

Check out the composite below, which shows the original image, an image modified using the standard Clone Stamp technique, and an image modified using the Vanishing Point Stamp Tool.

When I captured the pixels on the brick wall with the normal Clone Stamp tool, the bricks had a different angle; When I cloned them sideways, they were different sizes.

You can use the Vanishing Point Stamp tool as a healing brush by enabling the Heal option on the top toolbar.

This is very useful if you want to duplicate elements that cross two planes. See the example above – I selected an area, copied it and pasted it back. This acted as a perspective on the project, allowing me to manage the depth and make all the copy look more natural.
