There are many types of lens aberrations, but this article will focus on perspective aberrations. I’ve found that lens distortion only becomes a problem for photographers if you discover what it is and if you don’t. Apologies in advance though, because this will exclude you now that you don’t want to! When I first started, I had no idea that my lenses were distorting reality, so I never noticed it in my pictures. I remember when I first started posting photos on Flickr, when I was a fairly new photographer, I actually posted a photo I took of an old Methodist church. I took the shot from the second floor balcony, it was the best place for me to accidentally shoot while trying to get straight lines in your picture. Unfortunately for me, I tilted the camera slightly downward, causing the vertical lines of the scene to tilt towards the center of the image.

When someone tried to point this out to me, I was confused. I looked and looked at the picture but couldn’t see what he was talking about. He told me the lines were not straight! I couldn’t see the sight lines relative to the edges of the frame, I could only see the lines themselves. They were looking directly at me, and I was taken by this guy! Finally, he asked me to match the sight lines to the outer edges of the frame, and that’s when I had my first “aha” moment with lens distortion.

It is important to note that lens distortion in itself is neither good nor bad. Like most things, it depends on how and when you use it and whether you want to use it or not!

Here is a great example from the church. Notice how the columns taper toward the center of the frame? They don’t go straight up and down like in real life. It’s a very obvious distortion, but it works well for this image.

Here is another example of forest showing intentional lens distortion. The photographer pointed the lens directly at the tree, so the distortion created a canopy of conifers that seemed closed to you. If you go to this forest and stand in this place, all these trees will straighten up.

If you haven’t noticed this before, I hope you’re having your own little “aha” moment right now. Maybe you noticed something like this in your subconscious, but never thought about why the image appeared the way it did. This type of lens distortion is most common with wide-angle lenses and causes the camera to point up or down.
